thrift addict on a winning streak

I rode to five local oppies this morning, in two hours. It was a gorgeous day to be out on a bike. Now that spring is here I think I'll make it a standing Saturday-morning habit. Opshopping is addictive for the same reason pokie machines are addictive- you get a payoff only sometimes and you never know when it's going to be. You can have lucky streaks that make you reluctant to stop. I am on a streak now.

Vogue Living, March 1971. One dollar. But there'll be none of your harvest gold, avocado, mission brown or burnt orange... what we've got here are The Excitement Colours!

Fabric! On top is enough cotton seersucker for a sundress, in the middle is some wool that will make a cute little pencil skirt but will be salted away for winter, and on the bottom is some grey cotton drill. I've got a skirt pattern in mind for it.

A couple more designer patterns.

For when I make hotpants with a bib. Any day now.

Shoes! I'd seen these Sambag ones in another opshop but not in my size. I'd been all excited to find cute non-croc plastic shoes because I want something to wear to and from work in wet weather. Hunter make a chic pair of rubber ballet flats but they want over a hundred dollars for them. My heart leapt when I found these today, put them on and they fit!

More shoes. I had thought of buying these new quite awhile ago at the Country Road outlet.

I like them better from the opshop!

Books books books! I don't know what to read first. Never Let Me Go was a so-so movie, but it had such an interesting premise I made a note to seek out the book, which is supposed to be fantastic. I am really on the hunt for Michael Pollan's more recent books and hadn't heard of Botany of Desire. I like any book about food- I'm really keen to get stuck into the Julia Child book, I was so charmed by her portrayal in the Julie and Julia film.  I want to write a novel but I have no idea what it could be about. Maybe the prolific Stephen King can help?  Style Statement might actually be the first one I dig into. It's full of questionnaires to help you find your aesthetic. I feel like I have too many aesthetics and could benefit from some refining of taste. Bad Baby Names is for my pregnant friend Bec to help her out with some ideas. A very nice if stonerish neighbour once tried to lend me None Dare Call it Conspiracy, but at the time I begged off. I opened it up just now to a random page and found a diagram detailing the various arms of the World Supra-Government; the inclusion of Lehmann Brothers, Goldman Sachs, Rand Corporation and Standard Oil are unsurprising, but I wouldn't have tipped Kodak or the Book of The Month Club to be part of the New World Order.
